What is Immersion?
Immersion is a method of teaching in which core subjects (besides English language arts!) are taught in the target language- French or Spanish, at AMIS. This means that in Kindergarten, students spend 80-90% of their day working in French or Spanish. By second grade, they spend 60% of their day working in their target language. For third through eighth grade, target language/English instruction is close to50% each.
The French and Spanish Programs offer:
- Total Immersion model for Kindergarten and First Grade in French or Spanish in which students are taught in French or spanish the whole day
- Partial Immersion model for grades 2 - 8 in which part of the school day is taught in English and the remainder in the foreign language
- Two Way Immersion Program (Dual Language) that brings together Spanish and English speaking students
- English as a Second Language Program (ESL)
- The opportunity for students to learn to understand, speak, read and write in French and Spanish
- Students learn to understand and appreciate Spanish and French speaking people and their way of life
- The opportunity for the students to develop awareness of the contribution of the Spanish and French language and culture to American life
- Fostering of positive multiethnic and multicultural attitudes
